Breakfast with Congressman
Christopher Van Hollen

On June 22, 2010 at 7:30 am AWE hosted a very special breakfast meeting between the 2010 AWE winning companies and Congressman Van Hollen. The Congressman spoke about current government programs and policies as they affect business.  He answered questions from the floor and mingled with the winners. The event was a huge success and AWE is most grateful to the Congressman and winners for spending their early morning with AWE.

Alliance for Workplace Excellence
11th Annual Award Event

June 1st, 2010—600 Greater DC business executives joined together for a day filled with information, celebration and recognition. The Alliance has recognized the Washington, D.C. area’s best places to work for the past eleven years.  This year, AWE also honored 22 Mid-Atlantic region businesses that demonstrated their commitment to environmental sustainability.  The 67 winning companies represent more than one million employees from organizations of all sizes and in all sectors—private, public, and nonprofit.

ThinkFestIn 2010 61 companies were recognized as the Excellent Workplaces, 33 companies were recognized as Health & Wellness Trailblazers, and 21 companies were recognized as EcoLeaders.

The theme for this year’s luncheon was "AWEsome Leaders Celebrating Workplace Excellence."  Entertainment was provided by Bill Williams, a local musician, who has crafted a one of a kind performance recognizing all the best and unique aspects of all the 61 winning companies.  Our emcee was Kimberly Lohman Suiters, a news anchor with NBC4.

The day began with a series of 6 ThinkFest discussions.

ThinkFests are an innovatThinkFestive opportunity to gather in a small group of 8 to 10 people with a moderator, to discuss the most recent and current trends affecting business today. ThinkFest topics included: Best in Class Practices and Current Trends in Wellness, presented by Emily Kolakowski, Wellness Corporate Solutions; Virtual Workplaces and the Next Generation of Flexible Work Arrangements, presented by Judy Ashley, Caring Matters; Social Media as a Tool to Employee Engagement, presented by Janet McNichol, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association; Workplace Excellence: How Diversity and Inclusion Make a Workforce Stronger, presented by Bridget Atkinson, GTSI Corp; Total Rewards and Recognition-The Key to Employee Engagement, presented by Tobie Hollander, Holy Cross Hospital; and Health Reform-Impact on Employers, presented by Take Care Health Systems.

AWE will be compiling all the data from the ThinkFests and creating a report highlighting what works best, what doesn’t work, how to craft new programs, how to engage employees and all the key content developed from the ThinkFest discussions. This final report will be available to all event attendees in early July.
